Croftlands Junior School

Welcome

Croftlands Junior School is a thriving, inclusive local authority maintained school providing education for children aged 7-11 in the market town of Ulverston and the surrounding area.   Our children are compassionate, respectful and curious individuals supported by a dedicated and skilled team of 25 staff.   As Headteacher of Croftlands Junior School, it is a complete pleasure to work with such a committed staff, who see our children as unique individuals; nurturing their talents and gifts, gently challenging their curiosity and supporting them to become resilient, responsible and self-aware young people - ready to make a positive difference in the world.

In September 2023, there were 158 children on roll. The school is currently organised into three Y3/4 mixed age classes (Lower School), and three Y5/6 classes (Upper School). All classes are mixed ability and have an average of 26 pupils.   We benefit from a supportive and involved Governing Body, which meets half-termly.  Many of our Governors are involved not just in the strategic vision-setting for our school, but also in supporting our children with their reading journeys and enterprise initiatives.   We enjoy an active PTFA who fundraise to help us provide enrichment activities for all our children.

In late December 2018, we took possession of a brand new building that was built next door to the previous building. The old building was demolished and our playground built on the site.  Our new building is light, spacious and fit-for-purpose and we love to show it off to visitors!   We are lucky to have not just a large playground but also a expansive field and small wood.  Lots of sports activities, OPAL playtimes and nurture activities happen in our outdoor areas.  We offer Forest School here at Croftlands Junior.

We share our site with Croftlands Infant School.   Together, our children enjoy transition activities to support the move from Infants to Junior.  Our staff share expertise and training.    We also share our wonderful field and wood.

Skye - our School Nurture Dog

Skye belongs to Miss Mahon, the Headteacher but the children and staff have adopted her as our school nurture dog.  Skye is a calming and reassuring presence for our children.  It is beneficial for children to be able to have contact with her.  This can involve simply coming to say hello and sit with her, helping to care for her or Skye coming to sit with a group or class of children, whilst on her lead.  Some children are able to talk more freely, particularly when worries are getting them down, when sitting with Skye - she doesn't demand anything from us, just some love and attention.  Skye always likes to wish our sporting teams 'Good Luck' before they head off for their matches.  Skye has been carefully risk-assessed and a copy of this assessment is available from the school office.
